VIENNA SENATORS FALL IN FIRST NBC WORLD SERIES GAME |
WICHITA , Kan. August 1—After capturing a 39-5 regular season record and ninth league championship in the Clark Griffith League, Vienna Senators left their first game of the 2007 National Baseball Congress World Series with a 5-2 loss.
The Senators (0-1) competed against the Maxim Yankees of the California Collegiate Baseball League (1-0) in a 10 p.m. game Wednesday night and lost 5-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Nate Newman, one of the top aces of the Vienna staff, got the start for the team. He threw 5.1 innings and struck out nine batters. He only allowed three hits, but gave up all five runs. Nate Russ and Mason Griffin also appeared in the game for the Senators.
The Senators offense collected nine hits, but the team was only able to score two runs. First baseman Sam Honeck and right fielder Drew Allain both went 2-for-4 on the night, while shortstop J.D. Alfaro went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Geoff Klein stood out for the Maxim Yankees (25-10 regular season), going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a triple.
The Yankees were the first to score, bringing home their first run in the second inning. Geoff Klein's triple to left field brought home Gabe Alcantar.
The Senators responded with a run of their own to tie the game. Sam Honeck led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and scored as catcher Cody Lassley grounded out to the second baseman.
The game was tied 1-1 until the sixth inning, as the Yankees offense came to life. The Maxim team scored four runs on two hits. With bases loaded and one out, Gabe Alcantar walked to bring home center fielder John Allman. The Senators then brought in Nate Russ to pitch. He got Kurt Wideman to fly out, but the sacrifice allowed Jeffrey Van Doornum to score the Maxim Yankees' third run. Geoff Klein doubled to left center to bring home two more runs and put the Yankees up 5-1.
The Senators made a rally in the seventh, and scored their second and final run in the game. J.D. Alfaro hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Cody Lassley, a Wichita State student athlete.
The two teams went scoreless in the final innings.
The Senators look to continue competing in the double-elimination tournament in the upcoming week.
