VIENNA SENATORS DEFEAT SAN DIEGO BARONA STARS
|
WICHITA , Kan. August 6—Just one day after eliminating a tough, powerhouse team from the Alaska Baseball League, the Vienna Senators sent the San Diego Barona Stars packing, defeating the California team 5-3 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The San Diego Barona Stars, who typically play in the semi-pro circuit, represented a tough opponent for the Vienna Senators. But the Senators, who are ranked sixth in the nation by PG Crosschecker, put together their strongest offensive performances of the tournament to help down the Stars. The five runs are the most the Vienna club has scored this summer in Wichita .
The nine-time Clark Griffith League champions are now 44-6 overall this season and have won three straight games in the NBC World Series.
University of San Diego pitcher Darrin Campbell performed well in his start, only giving up two hits in 5.2 innings. Nate Russ got the win for the Senators, while Joel Brookens picked up the save. John Zorich and Mason Griffin also made an appearance in the game and helped hold the Stars at bay.
Several Senators stood out offensively in the game. Center fielder Ryan Eden went 2-for-4, while right fielder Drew Allain went 3-for-4 with an RBI. West Alabama product Nick Wheeler went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a home run, and J.D. Alfaro went 2-for-4 with a homer as well.
The San Diego Stars were the first to score, as they went up 1-0 in the first. Catcher Matt Powell homered to left field to get things started for the club.
The Senators responded with their own run in the second to tie the game. Drew Allain scored on a throwing error that allowed Ryan Eden to reach base.
Vienna pulled ahead 2-1 in the fourth. Left fielder and Wichita State product Cody Lassley scored as Drew Allain grounded out.
In the fifth inning, San Diego lost third baseman Mike Butterfield on an injury following J.D. Alfaro's single to third base. He remained in the game for the next play before being replaced by Nick Spears.
San Diego tied the game 2-2 in the sixth as Matt Powell doubled to left center field to score Robby Scott.
Vienna responded on got right back on top in the seventh as Nick Wheeler blasted a two-run homer run to left center field. It was his first of the tournament.
The Senators went up 5-2 in the top of the ninth, as J.D. Alfaro homered to left field. The San Diego Stars put up their third run in the bottom of the ninth, as pinch-hitter Marshall Harvey hit a sacrifice fly to bring home first baseman Brian Sos. But that's all the Vienna pitchers would allow, as the Senators eliminated the Stars.
The Senators will take on the Seattle Studs on August 7 in their continuing campaign to win the club's first NBC World Series championship.
