VIENNA SENATORS SUCCUMB TO SEATTLE STUDS
Senators Record 3-2 in NBC World Series

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. August 7—The Vienna Senators’ three-game winning streak at the NBC World Series ended Tuesday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The nine-time Clark Griffith League champions were shutout 8-0 by the Seattle Studs of the Pacific International League.

It was the only game this season the Senators have been shutout. The Vienna club has shutout opponents in nine games this season.

The loss ends the Senators’ campaign in the NBC World Series for this summer. The Senators leave the World Series with a 3-2 record, a two-game improvement from their championship run last season. The Senators end the year with an overall 44-7 record, 39-5 Clark Griffith League record and a No. 6 ranking by PG Crosschecker.

Senators ace Nate Newman got the start, and gave up four hits in his 2.2 innings of work. Six members of the pitching staff also threw in the game, including starters Aaron Loup and Dave Kellerberg. Vienna allowed 12 hits in the game and struck out just four batters.

The Senators offense only collected five hits in the game. Second baseman Matt Gaski went 2-for-4 for the team. Ryan Eden, Kyle Kretchmer and Cody Lassley were the other batters get a hit for Vienna.

Seattle pitcher Nick Cebula was tough on Vienna in the game. Cebula threw eight innings and struck out 12 Vienna batters to pick up the win. There was a lot of movement on his pitches, which made it hard for the Senators to get a hit off him. Because Cebula continually put his pitching thumb on the brim of his hat, belt and pants between throws, the two managers and umpires inspected him for any foreign substances. Cebula was declared clear of any foreign substance, and continued to play.

The heat was also a major factor in the game, as the temperature rose from 94 to 100 degrees during the game. One umpire had to leave the game in the fifth inning, and a third umpire came on the field later in the game.

The Senators defense was good in the game as well, as the team put together a double play in the second inning. In the sixth inning, first baseman Sam Honeck bare-handed a ball hit by Seattle left fielder Nate Baker, and flicked it to right fielder Drew Allain, telling him to throw it to first. Allain then made a terrific throw to pitcher Billy Tinsley to get Baker out at first base to end the inning.

First baseman Sam Honeck later made a diving catch and rapid throw to Florida Southern product Dave Kellerberg to get Nate Baker out at first again for the final out of the game.

The Vienna Senators will look forward to notching an unprecedented tenth Clark Griffith League championship and third straight NBC World Series appearance next summer.
