Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. August 4—The Vienna Senators (1-1) evaded elimination Saturday night at Maize High School, by defeating the San Antonio Titans, 3-2.

In their second game in the National Baseball Congress World Series, the Senators (39-5 in the CGL) totaled eight hits and managed to shut down the competition with strong pitching.

Vienna ace Aaron Loup of Tulane threw eight innings and struck out 11 batters. He only allowed one walk and five hits. Last season's Clark Griffith League Most Outstanding Pitcher, Mason Griffin, picked up the save for the team as well. Second baseman Matt Gaski went 2-for-3 and first baseman Sam Honeck went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead the Senators offensively.

The visiting Titans were the first to score in the game as center fielder Scott Cline hit an RBI single to score first baseman Gideon Williams.

But the Senators, ranked sixth in the nation by PG Crosschecker, responded to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Matt Gaski came around to score as Wichita State produce Cody Lassley singled. Gaski scored before third baseman Nick Wheeler was thrown out at home by San Antonio right fielder Cory Thompson.

The Senators put up their second run on the board in the bottom of the second. Catcher Chris Berset scored as Steven Gauthe hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

One of the key moments of the contest came in the third inning, as Aaron Loup struck out designated hitter Kent Taylor. Taylor went down swinging for the first out of the inning. Taylor threw down his bat, breaking it. He was ejected from the game.

In the fifth inning, the Senators went up 3-1 as Sam Honeck slammed a home run to right center field that went more than 375 feet.

In the ninth inning, Mason Griffin came on to close the game for Vienna . With one on and two out, Scott Cline came around to score as a fielding error allowed third baseman Aaron Gremmer to reach on base. Second baseman Bobby Pritchett hit a fielder's choice to force the third out and the Senators walked off the field with a 3-2 victory to stay alive in the tournament.

The Senators look to continue competing in the double-elimination tournament in the upcoming week.
