VIENNA SENATORS CONQUER RAIDERS
Senators move to 20-4 on the season

Box Score

ALEXANDRIA , Va. July 6—The Vienna Senators offense continued to be strong Friday night, as the team rocketed to a 16-3 victory against the McLean Raiders at Mt. Vernon High School .

The victory allows the Vienna Senators, the defending champions of the Clark Griffith League, to stay no more than a game behind the Fairfax Nationals in the league standings.

In their first game back after the Fourth of July holiday, the Senators collected 14 hits and held their opponents to just seven hits and three runs. Aaron Loup of Tulane picked up his fifth win, getting eight strikeouts in six innings of work. Sam Honeck and Cody Lassley both hit solo shots in the game. Honeck, who played for Grayson Community College this spring, leads the team with seven home runs this season.

The McLean Raiders, one of the newest teams in the Clark Griffith League, issued 15 walks to Vienna , which helped the Senators get plenty of runners on base to create scoring opportunities. The Senators definitely capitalized on those walks by compounding them with hits to help propel their offense.

Ryan Eden of the University of New Orleans went 3-for-5 with two RBI for the Senators. Anthony Scelfo, Nick Wheeler, and Sam Honeck had two RBI apiece in the game as well.

The Senators (20-4) got things rolling in the first inning. Anthony Scelfo walked and scored when Nick Wheeler of Itawamba Community College hit an RBI triple to right field. Wheeler scored before Sam Honeck became the third out of the inning on a 2-4-3 caught stealing play.

The second inning was the only inning in which the Senators did not score. Sam Honeck chalked up another run in the third with his solo shot. In the fourth inning, Cody Lassley hit the game's second home run, and right fielder Drew Allain crossed the plate off an RBI single by Ryan Eden.

Vienna went up 6-0 in the fifth when third baseman Nick Wheeler scored on a passed ball.

With four more runs in the sixth inning, the Senators pulled ahead 10-0. Left fielder Bryce Mendonca was the first to score in the sixth, as he came home while Sam Honeck grounded out. Ryan Eden and Anthony Scelfo scored on wild pitches as well in the sixth. Brandon Casamassima of Marshall University scored the tenth run on an RBI single by Michigan catcher Chris Berset.

Three more Vienna runs went up on the board in the top of the seventh. The Raiders walked in the first run of the inning. Kyle Page, who went in to replace Bryce Mendonca at left field in the seventh, scored when Nick Wheeler reached on a fielder's choice. Steven Gauthe came into pinch hit for Brandon Casamassima in the seventh, and got an RBI single to score Anthony Scelfo.

Anthony Scelfo's RBI single in the eighth chalked put the fourteenth run of the game for Vienna .

The Senators brought home two more runs in the top of the ninth, as Kyle Kretchmer hit an RBI double to score Steven Gauthe and Ryan Eden's walk allowed Chris Berset to reach home safely.

While Vienna had a 16-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, the Raiders were not out of the fight. An RBI single by Connor Mullee brought home Eric Mruczek. An RBI single by Kevin Watkins allowed Trae Gore to score, and Josh Steinberg came home on the error that allowed Jon Koenigsfeld to reach first. After the error, the Senators buckled down and got the last two outs they needed to finish the game.

The Senators are now 4-1 against the Raiders, as they have not lost to McLean since Opening Day on June 1.

The Senators will take on the Prince William Dawgs tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Forest Park High School in Dale City , Va.

For every home game at Waters Field the rest of this season, the Vienna Senators will be broadcasting their games and stats live on their web site.
