FAIRFAX , Va. June 17—The Vienna Senators made up a contest with the McLean Raiders, one of the newest teams in the Clark Griffith League on Father's Day at Fairfax High School . The Senators held off the Raiders from staging a late-run rally and won 4-3.
The Senators got a bit of revenge Sunday, as Vienna was able to defeat the team that beat them at home for the season opener. The Senators are now 1-1 against McLean , and 11-3 overall.
Southpaw John Zorich got his second start for the Senators, and picked up another win in a brilliant performance. Zorich, a rising junior from Louisiana-Lafayette, went 7.1 innings and gave up just four hits and one run. Last season's CGL Most Outstanding Pitcher, Mason Griffin, came in to relieve Zorich in the eighth, and shut down the Raiders in order in the bottom of the ninth to complete the win.
The first three innings went quickly, with each team getting just two hits a piece. Vienna chalked up its first run in the fourth inning, as third baseman Nick Wheeler smacked a solo home run over the left field wall. The Raiders responded in the bottom of the inning and tied the game as Drew Lydon hit an RBI single to score Robbie Shields. Lydon's hit bounced off Zorich's leg and Lydon reached safely.
The Senators put another run up on the board in the fifth to pull ahead, 2-1. Second baseman Bryce Mendonca walked and scored when Ryan Eden from the University of New Orleans hit a single.
Zorich got out of a bases loaded with just one out situation in the fifth by striking out Kevin Watkins and getting Eric Mruczek to ground out to end the McLean threat.
Vienna went up 4-1 in the top of the seventh as righty Josh McPhershon came on to pitch for the Raiders. With two out, catcher Steve Moritz reached first after being hit by a pitch. Eden doubled to get runners in scoring position for the Senators. Then shortstop Steven Gauthe singled and Moritz scored. Wheeler then hit an RBI single to score Eden and give Vienna another insurance run.
The Raiders made a rally charge in the bottom of the eighth. After striking out Kelly Muir to start the inning, Zorich gave up a pair of singles and Griffin went into pitch. Griffin gave up an RBI single to Shields. One the next batter, Lydon was called out for interference as Moritz attempted to throw Shields out at second. With two out and runners on the corners, Joe Mizzoni came up to bat. As Moritz tried to throw out Shields again at second base, Mruczek scored to make the score 4-3. Mizzoni walked but Griffin struck out Alex Swenson to stop the threat.
While Eden singled in the top of the ninth for the Senators, Vienna was not able to bring him home. Griffin put the Raiders down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
The Senators go back on the road to take on the DC Grays at Hayfield Secondary School tomorrow at 7 p.m. in their first of three games this week.
