ALEXANDRIA , Va. June 18—The Vienna Senators continued their road trip Monday, taking on the DC Grays at Hayfield Secondary School . The Senators walked away with another big victory against the Grays, winning 13-1.
The Senators (12-3 overall) held the Grays scoreless until the eighth inning, and only gave up one run with strong pitching and fielding. Dave Kellerberg, a righty from Florida Southern, picked up the win for the Senators, going five innings and striking out nine batters. Mike Fournier and Mason Griffin performed well in relief for the Senators.
The story of the night was the strong hitting by the Senators, whose relentless bats propelled Vienna to victory. The strong play of late has been pushing the Senators closer and closer to the first place spot in the Clark Griffith League standings. Before Monday's game, the first-place Fairfax Nationals were a half-game ahead of the Senators.
The Senators got on board in the third inning. Designated Hitter Ryan Heroy from Pepperdine smacked a 2-RBI double to score third baseman Nick Wheeler and first baseman Sam Honeck. Heroy ran to third on the throw. New Orleans native Drew Allain was next at bat, and he reached first and second on an error. The error also allowed Heroy to score and to put the Senators up 3-0.
Vienna 's big inning game in the top of the fifth, as the Senators chalked up six more runs. After Honeck walked and Heroy singled, Allain stepped up to the plate and hit a 2-RBI double. Left fielder Kyle Page then singled. Shortstop Steven Gauthe walked to load the bases with just one out. The Grays brought on Craig Pendleton to relieve southpaw Kevin Collins. Senators Cody Lassley of Wichita State then walked and Allain scored. The Senators got their seventh run when University of New Orleans product Ryan Eden hit an RBI single. Pendleton then struck out Anthony Scelfo to get the second out. But with the bases still loaded, Wheeler came out and slugged a 2-RBI single. Pendleton struck out Honeck to end the Vienna threat.
The Senators added three more runs in the next inning. Heroy hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall to lead off the sixth inning. Allain walked, Bryce Mendonca was hit by a pitch and Gauthe walked to load the bases for the Senators. Then Lassley got another RBI walk to put the Senators up 11-0. Gauthe scored next as Eden grounded out to the first baseman.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fournier took over on the mound for Vienna , and held the Grays scoreless. The Senators notched their final run of the game in the eighth inning, as Alex Feemster came on to pitch. Scelfo hit an RBI single to score Lassley.
Benji Kagan went into pitch for Vienna in the bottom of the eighth. Dean Johnson walked to start the inning and Feemster singled. Raphael Turner singled, and Johnson began running home, but he was thrown out in front of the plate by a strong throw from Allain. Lassley tagged Johnson about a foot from the plate to get the second out of the inning. Juan Mujica then hit an RBI single to score Feemster and get the Grays on the board. Mujica was later put out by Gauthe to end the inning.
The Senators bats were silent in the top of the ninth, and last season's CGL Most Outstanding Pitcher, Mason Griffin, retired the Grays in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the 13-1 victory.
The Senators will return to Waters Field for a third meeting with the Fairfax Nationals on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
