VIENNA , Va. June 27—With the power of three homers, the Vienna Senators were propelled to a 11-2 victory against the McLean Raiders Wednesday night at Waters Field.
With the win, the Senators begin to chip away at the Fairfax Nationals' lead in the standings. The Senators are now two games behind the Nationals, and Vienna still has a couple games to make up in the next week. The Senators are now 15-3 on the season and are now 3-1 against the McLean Raiders.
Aaron Loup, a southpaw from Tulane, picked up his fourth win of the season. He pitched seven strong innings and gave up just two hits. He did not allow any runs. Righty Adam Dobies came in for the Senators in relief, gave up just three hits and two runs. McLean hurler Ian Lenda, who held Vienna hitless for six innings on June 21 did not have as much luck again Wednesday. Lenda tossed five innings but gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs in the game.
Right fielder Anthony Scelfo, third baseman Nick Wheeler and catcher Cody Lassley all hit home runs for Vienna. Lassley, a Wichita State product, went 2-for-4 on the night and collected two RBIs. Scelfo and Wheeler each ended the game with three RBI.
The game started off with a bang for the Senators, as Ryan Eden singled to lead off the Vienna attack. Scelfo then reached on a fielder's choice as Eden was put out at second base on the play. Then Wheeler, a slugger from Itawamba Community College, walloped a two-run home run to but Vienna up on the board. Lenda then walked first baseman Sam Honeck. Honeck scored when designated hitter Ryan Heroy singled down the left field line.
Up 3-0, the Senators added another run in the third inning off a Drew Allain RBI single.
The Senators brought out their lumber again in the bottom of the sixth. Allain led off the inning with a single, and Lassley launched a two-run bomb over the wall in the deepest part of center field. Later that inning, shortstop Steven Gauthe of Copiah-Lincoln scored as Nick Wheeler flied out.
Vienna had a seven-run cushion heading into the seventh inning. Bryce Mendonca, who entered the game to play second in the top of the seventh got on base with a single. He scored when Gauthe hit an RBI single to center field. With runners on second and first and two out, Wheeler smacked a three-run homer to center field.
McLean was able to chalk up some runs in the eighth inning. Dobies came in to relieve Loup on the mound. Connor Mullee led off the inning with a single and Joe Koenigsfeld followed that with another single.
Then things got tough for the Senators. Kelly Muir came up to bat and hit the ball down into foul territory in right field. Scelfo came running in from right field, while Honeck went back from first base. The two men collided in foul territory as Mullee crossed the plate to score the Raiders' first run. Honeck had caught the ball, but in the collision, the ball dropped out of his glove. The Senators bench moved en masse to check on their comrades, and Scelfo and Honeck were able to walk off the field to the relieved clapping of fans. Nate Newman went in to play first base Chris Berset came in to catch as Lassley moved to right field.
The umpires called Muir out, but the shutout was gone as Mullee had scored. With Koenigsfeld on third and one out, Dobies got Kevin Watkins to ground out. However, the play allowed Koenigsfeld to score the second McLean run.
The two teams went down quietly the rest of the eighth and ninth innings.
