Box Score

VIENNA , Va. June 29—The weather may have cooled on Friday, but the Vienna Senators' bats stayed hot, as the team rolled to another win.

The Vienna Senators, the defending champions of the Clark Griffith Baseball League, defeated the DC Grays 8-2 at Waters Field Friday night. Vienna won its tenth straight game and improved to 16-3 on the year.

The Senators will have tomorrow off from official league play, as the Clark Griffith League will host the neighboring Maryland Collegiate Baseball League in the 2007 Joe Branzell Home Run Derby and All-Star Game tomorrow at Waters Field.

The Senators offense put together 10 hits to help lift the team to victory. Dave Kellerberg, a right handed pitcher from St. Cloud, Fla., was sharp on the mound for Vienna, going six innings and striking out seven. Kellerberg, only gave up one hit and one walk in his performance.

Darrin Campbell of the University of San Diego made his first appearance of the season Friday, pitching an inning and striking out two for the Senators. Mike Fournier finished on the mound for Vienna.

The DC Grays got the first run of the game, as Alex Rossi scored on an error in the second inning.

But second baseman Brandon Casamassima, the team's Player of the Week, smacked his second home run of the season to deep center field to provide the Senators with their first run of the game in the bottom of the second.

With the game tied at one, the Senators knuckled down on the Grays and put them out in order in the top of the third.

Vienna compiled a four-run charge in the third inning to take the lead permanently. Ryan Eden and Steven Gauthe singled for Vienna to get the offense rolling. Eden scored on a passed ball while Nick Wheeler walked. With Gauthe on third and Wheeler on first with no out, Casamassima walked to load the bases. Then first baseman Ryan Heroy reached on a fielder's choice which scored Gauthe, while Casamassima was put out at second. Right fielder Drew Allain then walked and catcher Chris Berset followed with a single to right field ,which allowed Wheeler to cross the plate. Alan Harris hit another single and Heroy scored. Allain came rounding home, but was thrown out at the plate by DC centerfielder LaDale Hayes.

The two teams were scoreless in the fourth, but the Senators added another run in the fifth to pull ahead 6-1, as Wheeler scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams were quiet in the next two innings, and the Senators added two more runs in the eighth. Heroy led off with a double and Cody Lassley, who came in to play right field in the seventh inning hit a single. Heroy scored and Nate Newman reached safely on an error. Lassley scored the final Vienna run when Eden hit an RBI-single. Bryce Mendonca also tried to score on Eden's single, but was thrown out at home by the DC left fielder, Juan Mujica. Mendonca was the third out of the eighth.

The DC Grays added another run in the top of the ninth, as John Barrett hit an RBI double to score Raphael Turner. The Senators shut down the Grays to end the game.

While Friday was a success for the Senators on the field, it was also a huge success for them in the press box. The Vienna Senators had their first successful live web broadcast of the game. Thomas Gray provided the live play-by-play for Friday night's game.

The Senators will broadcast home games for the rest of the season. Fans who wish to tune in can go to www.ViennaSenators.com and click on “Live Game Webcasts” to listen to the games when they can't make it to the field.

Tomorrow's 2007 Joe Branzell Home Run Derby and All-Star Game will also be broadcasted live at that site as well.
