VIENNA SENATORS TAKE TWO FROM GIANTS |
Box Score Game 1
Box Score Game 2
GAITHERSBURG , Md. June 9—After two big wins against the DC Grays, the Vienna Senators proved again they could come from behind to win twice Saturday in a doubleheader against the Gaithersburg Giants at Gaithersburg High School .
The Senators, defending champions of the Clark Griffith League, beat the Giants 4-2 in Game 1 and 6-2 in Game 2. With the pair of victories, Vienna moves to 6-2 on the season. Because it was a doubleheader, the teams played seven innings in both games. The Giants are in the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League, so the games were part of the 2007 inter-league competition.
Anthony Scelfo, a rising junior from Tulane, stood out for Vienna in the pair of games. In the first game, Scelfo went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and RBI single. In the second game, Scelfo slugged another RBI triple and scored the run that put Vienna ahead, 3-2. Itawamba Community College product Nick Wheeler went 2-for-3 with a double in Game 2 to also lead the way for the Senators.
The Senators pitching was right on track Saturday. Nate Newman, a righty from Grayson Community College , got the start in Game 1 while Adam Dobies from Marshall got the nod in Game 2. Mason Griffin, last year's League's Most Outstanding Pitcher, closed in both games and shut down the Giants. The Senators staff held the Giants to just nine hits total in the two games.
In Game 1, the Giants chalked up the first run as Kevin Collins scored in the first inning. In the top of the third, shortstop Bryce Mendonca walked and Scelfo walloped an RBI triple to right field to get the Senators on the board and tie the game. Wheeler hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Scelfo and put Vienna ahead, 2-1.
The score stayed the same until the fifth, when Vienna added two more runs. Mendonca walked and stole second to move into scoring position for Scelfo. Scelfo brought him home with an RBI single. Wheeler and Allain walked to load the bases for the Senators. Brandon Cassamasina hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which allowed Scelfo to score Vienna 's fourth and final run.
In the sixth, Newman was relieved by Mike Fournier, who put down three Giants hitters in succession. Griffin came on in the seventh for Vienna . He gave up two singles but managed to prevent any runs from scoring, to preserve the Senators' 4-1 victory. In Game 1, Scelfo made the only two hits for Vienna , but the Senators were walked nine times.
After a thirty minute break, the two teams clashed again on the pristine field.
In Game 2, the Giants put up two on the board in the first inning, by batting in a couple of runs. The score stayed 2-0 in favor of Gaithersburg until the top of the fourth, when the Senators notched their first hits of the game and scored a run. Scelfo walked and then right fielder Kyle Kretchmer reached on an error. First baseman Sam Honeck notched an RBI single to bring Scelfo home safely. Wheeler then singled to load the bases, but the Giants got two outs to end the Vienna threat.
In the top of the fifth, the Senators moved ahead 3-2. With two out, Mendonca was hit by a pitch, and Scelfo knocked another RBI triple to right field. As Scelfo slid into third, an overthrown ball by the Giants second baseman went to the fence, and Scelfo came home safely too.
Dave Kellerberg, from Florida Southern, came on in the fifth for Vienna and put down three Giants quickly. The Senators added three more runs in the sixth. Honeck walked, and Wheeler slugged an RBI double off the centerfield wall to bring Honeck home. Wheeler moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Allain. Cassamasina then walked to put runners on the corners. Wheeler scored on a passed ball while Kyle Page was at-bat for Vienna . Page reached first on an error and Cassamasina scored to put the Senators up 6-2.
Fournier came in to pitch in the sixth for Vienna , and again put down three batters in succession. Griffin threw the final frame for the Senators, and struck out the side.
The twin victories against the Giants was the second doubleheader sweep of the season for the Senators. The Senators will be back at Waters Field in Vienna at 1 p.m. to take on the Fairfax Nationals.
