FAIRFAX , Va. July 12—The Vienna Senators claimed first place in the Clark Griffith League for the first time this season with two victories on Thursday night against the Fairfax Nationals at Paul VI High School .
Entering tonight's action, the Senators were a game behind the Nationals, but the two wins put Vienna a game ahead in the league with a 24-4 league record.
The action started at 5:30 p.m. when the two teams went head-to-head to complete a game that the umpires suspended on June 28 due to rain. The umpires called the game after seven innings with the two teams tied 3-3. The two squads started at the top of the eighth where they left off.
In the 11 th inning, the Senators knocked in the winning run off an RBI double by Anthony Scelfo. Mason Griffin, last season's league Most Outstanding Pitcher, buckled down against the opposition in the bottom of the eleventh to pick up the win. A strong throw by right fielder Drew Allain to catcher Chris Berset put out the runner at home for the final out and sealed the 4-3 victory.
The two teams battled again starting at 7 p.m, with Aaron Loup on the mound for the Senators and Gabriel Rios pitching for the Nationals. Strong defense and careful pitching on both sides characterized the game. Sam Honeck was the hero of the game for Vienna , smacking his tenth home run of the season—his sixth in the last six league games—which put the Senators ahead for good. Honeck leads the team in home runs and RBIs.
Fairfax jumped on board first as Alex Gregory hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which allowed Will Naylor to score.
The Nationals held onto their one-run lead until the top of the fourth when designated hitter Xavier Qualls, last season's League Most Valuable player, scored when center fielder Ryan Eden hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
The two teams stayed at one run apiece until the eighth inning. With two out, Tulane produce Anthony Scelfo singled to center field and Nick Wheeler was intentionally walked to get runners on for Vienna . Sam Honeck stepped up to the plate and hit a 3-run home run just over the right field wall. The ball bounced back into the park off the top of the fence, and Honeck ran quickly to make it home to score the team's fourth run.
Mason Griffin came back on to pitch in the middle of the eighth inning and he secured another save. Griffin put own the Nationals in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 4-1 victory for the Senators.
The Vienna Senators are now 4-2 against the Fairfax Nationals.
