Box Score

VIENNA, Va. July 16—With just two full weeks left in the regular season, the Vienna Senators began their final push toward an unprecedented ninth league championship and a third trip to the National Baseball Congress World Series with a strong win against the DC Grays. The Senators (28-4) defeated the Grays (6-25) 18-5 at Waters Field Monday evening.

Right-handed pitcher Dave Kellerberg picked up his fourth win of the season, throwing five innings and striking out seven. Benji Kagan and Sam Honeck also appeared in relief, and they each only gave up two hits in a two-inning performance.

Fifteen total Vienna batters appeared in the game, and the Senators collected 18 hits in the game. Third baseman Nick Wheeler went 3-for-6 with 2 RBI while outfielder Cody Lassley went 5-for-7 with 3 RBI. Ryan Eden went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI while Alan Harris went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI in the game as well.

The Vienna offense got things started in the first inning as the Senators went up 4-0. Infielder Bryce Mendonca led off and got on base after being hit by a pitch. He scored on an RBI single by first baseman Sam Honeck. Xavier Qualls, Honeck and Cody Lassley all scored in the inning as well. Honeck was walked in when the Grays had bases loaded with one out and walked catcher Chris Berset. An RBI single by center fielder Ryan Eden brought home Lassley.

Vienna added another run in the second inning as Lassley smacked an RBI double to left field to bring home Xavier Qualls.

But the Grays made a comeback bid in the bottom of the second and made it 5-4. After issuing a walk, giving up a hit and hitting the third batter, the Senators defense was facing a loaded diamond with no out. Then designated hitter John Barrett blasted a triple to right field to score three runs. Barrett came round to score when first baseman Dean Johnson hit an RBI single. The Senators defense settled down and got the next three outs to get out of the jam.

In the third, the Senators got an insurance run as an RBI double by Bryce Mendonca allowed Ryan Eden to cross the plate for the team's sixth run.

The main Vienna barrage came in the fourth inning, as the team scored seven runs. Another RBI double from Cody Lassley brought home third baseman Nick Wheeler. Kyle Kretchmer picked up an RBI with a single to right field which scored Sam Honeck. Brandon Casamassima then loaded the bases with no out when he was hit by a pitch. Chris Berset was walked, which allowed Lassley to trot across the plate for the team's third run of the inning. Ryan Eden then hit a long sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Kyle Kretchmer.

But then the fourth inning got interesting. Bryce Mendonca stepped up to the place and hit the ball to the middle infield. The Grays tried to get Chris Berset out at second, but the second baseman committed an error which allowed Berset to go to third and Brandon Casamassima to score. The Grays got the second out of the inning as Xavier Qualls grounded out, but the play allowed Berset to score the sixth run of the inning. Bryce Mendonca came home when Nick Wheeler hit an RBI single to right field.

But the Grays put up another run of their own in the fourth, as John Barrett led of the inning with a solo home run to left field to make it 13-5.

Vienna added two more runs to rest on a 10-run cushion in the fifth inning, as Alan Harris smacked a 2-RBI double to center field to score Steven Gauthe and Drew Allain, who were substituted into the game in the fourth and fifth innings respectively.

The offense was quiet on both sides in the sixth inning. The Senators put up a run in each of the final three innings. Cody Lassley hit a solo homer in the eighth inning to make it 17-5 and Alan Harris came around to score the final Vienna run in the ninth inning.

The Senators look to continue their winning streak as they play a game every day this week and next week as they wrap up the 2007 season.
