VIENNA, Va. July 17—After being ranked 13 th in the nation by PG Crosschecker earlier on Tuesday, the Vienna Senators continued to do what got them national notice—win.
The Senators defeated the Bethesda Blue Caps 7-3 at Waters Field Tuesday night, and the victory allowed them to match an early-season winning streak at 11 games. The Senators are working to stay atop the Clark Griffith League standings and make it to the National Baseball Congress World Series for the second year in a row.
Nate Newman picked up his fifth win of the season in a solid performance. Newman threw eight innings and struck out 11 batters. Mason Griffin, last season's league Most Outstanding Pitcher, appeared for an inning in relief and struck out the side.
Catcher Cody Lassley had another great night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a triple. Center fielder Drew Allain went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the game as well.
The Senators (29-4) were the first team to score, putting up two runs in the second inning. First baseman Sam Honeck came home when Cody Lassley smacked a triple to right field, and Lassley came home as right fielder Kyle Kretchmer grounded out to the second baseman.
Vienna went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, and the Blue Caps put up their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single by Sean Plouffe brought home Ross Sweeney to make it 3-1.
Both teams put up two runs in the seventh inning. Bryce Mendonca, who came in to play left field in the sixth inning, brought home Cody Lassley with an RBI single, and Mendonca scored when Drew Allain hit an RBI double to left center field. Catcher Sam Loesche and right fielder Sean Plouffe both scored in the seventh for the Blue Caps.
With the score 5-3 heading into the ninth inning, the Senators got to work again. Bryce Mendonca reached first on a bunt single and scored on a passed ball during Brandon Casamassima's at-bat. Casamassima got on base on an error and later scored the seventh and final Vienna run when Steven Gauthe hit an RBI single.
The Senators have now won their fifth game against the Bethesda Blue Caps. Tuesday's contest was the closest game between the two franchises this season. The two teams will go head-to-head tomorrow at Waters Field at 7 p.m.
