VIENNA SENATORS DEFEAT MCLEAN RAIDERS
Senators extend winning streak to 15 total games

Box Score

VIENNA, Va. July 19—The Vienna Senators improved to 33-4 on the season with a solid 6-2 victory against the McLean Raiders Thursday night.

Tulane southpaw Aaron Loup got the start for the Senators. Loup, who is credited by PG Crosschecker as a key reason why the team has the best record in the nation, performed well Thursday night. Loup threw eight innings and stuck out 10 batters. Mason Griffin closed the came for Vienna .

While the rain drizzled in the latter half of the game, the weather did not affect the game, and the Senators put together a solid offensive and defensive performance.

The Senators jumped on board in the first inning and never looked back. Second baseman Steven Gauthe scored the team's first run as designated hitter Sam Honeck grounded out.
Vienna went up 3-0 in the third inning. Southeastern Louisiana product Xavier Qualls smacked a double down the left field line and Sam Honeck followed him on base with a walk. Center fielder Ryan Eden hit an RBI single to left center field to score Xavier Qualls, and Kyle Kretchmer of UNLV hit an RBI single to score Sam Honeck.

The Raiders got on the board in the fourth inning, as Eric Mruczek notched an RBI double to center field to allow Jason Kitchen, who transferred to the Raiders from the Bethesda Blue Caps, to score.

But the Senators continued to pull away in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two out, first baseman Ryan Heroy hit a 2-RBI double down the left field line to put Vienna up 5-1.

McLean put up their second run in the sixth. Jason Kitchen led off the inning with a double to center field. Kitchen scored as Robbie Shields hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Senators added their sixth and final run in the top of the ninth as Drew Allain of Delgado Community College scored as Ryan Heroy hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Right-handed pitcher Mason Griffin came on to relieve Aaron Loup in the ninth inning. Griffin , last year's league Most Outstanding Pitcher, faced four batters and struck out two. The Vienna Senators have won every game against the Raiders since losing to them on Opening Day. The McLean Raiders are one of two Clark Griffith League teams to defeat the Vienna Senators.

The Clark Griffith League recently decreed that the Vienna Senators, along with the McLean Raiders, Bethesda Blue Caps and DC Grays be credited with two wins for a doubleheader against the Hunt Manor Mavericks of the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League. All Clark Griffith League teams were supposed to play the Hunt Manor team, but because that franchise closed in the middle of the season, only the Fairfax Nationals competed with them.

The Senators were supposed to play Hunt Manor on July 7, and have now been credited with those victories. As those two games came in the middle of their second streak, the Senators can claim a 15-game winning streak and a 33-4 record.

With their 33 victories this season, the Vienna Senators have improved upon the last couple of seasons. In 2005, the club went 31-13 and in 2006, the Senators were 30-10. In both 2005 and 2006, the Senators won the league championship. The Senators look to be in good shape to clinch an unprecedented ninth Clark Griffith League pennant this season.

For every home game at Waters Field the rest of this season, the Vienna Senators will be broadcasting their games and stats live on their web site. For fans that cannot make it to the stadium on game days, they can keep up with their favorite summer collegiate baseball team at www.ViennaSenators.com and click on “Live Game Broadcasts.”

The next broadcast will be on Friday, July 20, when the Senators take on the McLean Raiders at Waters Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
