VIENNA SENATORS SPLIT WITH COLUMBIA REDS
Winning streak ends at 11 games in Game 2

Box Score

COLUMBIA , MD. July 1—Just one day after the All-Star break, the Vienna Senators got back to business. But they were only successful in winning one game of a doubleheader Sunday against the Columbia Reds, as they dropped the second game to end their win streak at 11 games.

The Senators took on the Columbia Reds of the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League Sunday at Atholton High School . Adam Dobies got the start in Game 1 and held the Reds to just four hits. Billy Tinsley started on the mound for the Senators in Game 2, and despite overcoming his early struggles, took the loss for the team. The Senators won the first game 9-4 in eight innings and lost the second game, 9-3.

The Senators were the first on the board in Game 1 as shortstop Steven Gauthe of Copiah-Lincoln Community College hit an RBI single to score first baseman Sam Honeck. Gauthe went 3-for-4 in the first game with an RBI and a run scored. He also went 2-for-3 in the second game with an RBI double.

But the Reds responded with two runs of their own in the second inning of Game 1, as Brian Wyman and Brady Baxter hit an RBI double.

In the top of the third, the Senators tied the game 2-2 as third baseman Bryce Mendonca scored as designated hitter Nick Wheeler grounded out. The Senators' bats were quiet until the fifth inning, when they added another run to pull ahead 3-2. Mendonca came home safely as Wheeler had a sacrifice fly to left field.

But the Reds charged back with two runs of their own in the fifth, as two runners scored on an error.

Vienna tied the game at four with a run in the seventh to force an extra inning. When the Senators came up in the eighth, they had a five-run explosion to pull ahead 9-4. University of New Orleans product Ryan Eden hit an 2-RBI single and Wheeler hit an 2-RBI double and Brandon Casamassima of Marshall University hit an RBI single. Dobies held the Reds scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win for the Senators and extend the wining streak to 11.

But the offensive power that the Senators displayed in the last inning of Game 1 did not appear in Game 2, as strong pitching by the Reds held the Vienna bats in check.

Billy Tinsley allowed three Columbia runners to score in both the first and second innings, as the Reds charged ahead 6-0. Tinsley gave up seven hits in the first two innings, and twelve total in the game. He went five innings and the Reds got all nine runs against him. Mason Griffin, last season's Clark Griffith League Most Outstanding Pitcher came in and put out the Reds in order in the sixth in relief.

The only three Vienna runs in Game 2 came in the fourth inning, as the Senators scraped together a rally. Mendonca led off the inning with a single, and he came home as Gauthe hit an RBI double. Then designated hitter Alan Harris smacked an RBI single to score Gauthe. Harris later scored as Eden put an RBI single into right field. But the Senators were not able to get more than two runners on base in the last three innings.

The Senators look to get back on the winning track Monday, as they take on the DC Grays at 7 p.m. at Waters Field in Vienna , Va.
