VIENNA SENATORS TAKE DOWN DC GRAYS |
VIENNA , Va. July 2—The Vienna Senators hung on to win another game at Waters Field Monday night. For the fifth time this season, the Senators pulled out a victory from the DC Grays.
Monday night's game was the closest contest between the Senators and the Grays this season, as the Senators won 5-4. Darrin Campbell got the start for Vienna , while Benji Kagan, Dave Kellerberg and Mason Griffin appeared for the Senators in relief. Griffin , last seasons' Clark Griffith Leagu Most Outstanding Pitcher, picked up the save.
It was also Anthony Scelfo's first game back since his collision on June 27 with Sam Honeck. Scelfo celebrated his return to the active roster from the disabled list with a home run to right field. First baseman Sam Honeck also homered in the game.
The Grays took a one-run lead in the first inning as LaDale Hayes of Alabama A&M crossed the plate while designated hitter Mike Marion grounded out.
After being held hitless in the first three innings by Grays starter Kristopher Gausch, the Senators started off the fourth inning with a bang. Scelfo led off with his home run to right field and Sam Honeck followed that up with a solo shot of his own. The Senators ended the fourth inning with a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the DC Grays piled on three more runs. Jabari Graham scored on an error. Dean Johnson and Al McCormick both scored on a double by Hayes, to put the Grays ahead 4-2.
The Senators responded and got a run of their own as Ryan Eden scored in the bottom of the fifth. Vienna piled on two more runs in the sixth to pull ahead 5-4. Scelfo led off the sixth with a walk, and he moved to second as third baseman Nick Wheeler singled. As Ryan Heroy grounded out, the runners advanced. Right fielder Drew Allain hit a 2-RBI double to right field to allow Scelfo and Wheeler to score.
The Senators and Grays went quietly in the last three innings, and Vienna went on to pick up the win. The Senators are now 18-4 on the season.
The Senators will take on the Bethesda Blue Caps, one of the newest franchises in the Clark Griffith League, at 7 p.m. at Waters Field.
