VIENNA SENATORS BLANK MCLEAN RAIDERS |
VIENNA , Va. July 20 —The Vienna Senators collected their fourth shutout of the season against the McLean Raiders Friday night, cruising to a 9-0 victory.
The Senators, now 34-4, combined a strong pitching performance with solid hitting to pull out the victory. Billy Tinsley got the start and picked up his third win of the season. He threw eight innings and struck out 10 batters. Tinsley is the third pitcher this week to go eight innings and strike out 10 or more. John Zorich closed the game tonight for the Senators, and he struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Vienna collected nine hits in the contest. Left fielder Bryce Mendonca went 3-for-5 with an RBI and center fielder Ryan Eden went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. The Vienna defense was strong also, as the outfielders made several key grabs and the infield turned two double plays.
The Senators picked up their first run in the first inning. Xavier Qualls, last season's league Most Valuable Player, hit an RBI single to score Bryce Mendonca.
The squad had a huge inning in the second, as they brought home four runs to pull ahead 5-0. Ryan Heroy led off the inning with a single to center field. The Raiders then issued two walks to Brandon Casamassima and Cody Lassley to load the bases with no out. Shortstop JD Alfaro then stepped up to the plate and hit the ball to the McLean shortstop. Alfaro reached first on a fielder's choice, as the shortstop tagged second base to get Lassley out. But Ryan Heroy scored on the play.
Ryan Eden of the University of New Orleans hit an RBI single to right center to allow Casamassima to come home. With runners on the corners and one out, Bryce Mendonca hit a single, and advanced to second on the throw. The play brought JD Alfaro home safely. Ryan Eden came around to score the fifth run on a bunt by Xavier Qualls of Southeastern Louisiana .
The Senators piled on three more runs in the third inning. With bases loaded and no out, Cody Lassley reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Sam Honeck of Tulane to score. Ryan Eden's 2-RBI single up the middle brought home designated hitter Ryan Heroy and catcher Cody Lassley.
The Senators put up their final run in the sixth inning as Bryce Mendonca scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Honeck.
