Box Score Game 1 Box Score Game 2
EMMITSBURG, Md. July 21—The Vienna Senators, defending champions of the Clark Griffith League, split its final doubleheader of the season, to go to 35-5 on the season.
The Senators played the Carroll County Rangers of the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League Saturday afternoon at Mount St. Mary's University, and lost the first game, 2-1 and won the second game, 7-2.
While the loss of the first game ended the Senators' winning streak at 16 games, the second victory likely sealed Vienna 's quest for an unprecedented ninth league title.
The Senators, the 13 th ranked team in the nation by PG Crosschecker, played two solid games against the Raiders. The Vienna pitchers were tough in both games, allowing only eight hits total. The Senators had some offensive trouble in the first game, as they only totaled four hits. In the second game, Vienna batters had better luck, notching seven hits.
Right-handed pitcher Darrin Campbell got the start for the Senators in Game 1. He was relieved by Benji Kagan of George Mason University in the third inning. Both pitchers combined to only allow five hits and two earned runs in the game.
Through the opening three innings of the first game, the two teams were scoreless. The Senators were the first to chalk up a run. First baseman Sam Honeck led off the fourth inning with a double to right field. Honeck moved to third as catcher Cody Lassley grounded out. Honeck then scored the team's lone run on a wild pitch during designated hitter Brandon Casamassima's at-bat.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Rangers put up their two runs, which turned out to be enough for the squad to secure the win. A 2-RBI double down the left field line by pinch-hitter Matt Statso scored shortstop Mark Lemon and catcher Tom Meaney.
The pitchers on each team shut down their opposition, and the game ended 2-1 in favor of the Rangers.
In the second game, the Senators put several pitchers up on the mound. Sam Honeck, who will be transferring to Tulane this fall, got the start. Kyle Kretchmer of UNLV, also made an appearance on the mound. Last season's league Most Outstanding Pitcher, Mason Griffin, threw four innings in the game as well. The trio combined to allow only three hits in the game and to strike out six batters.
The Senators went up 1-0 in the second inning of Game 2. Brandon Casamassima, who reached on a walk, scored as shortstop J.D. Alfaro singled over the head of the third baseman.
The Rangers came back to score two runs in the bottom of the second. Mark Lemon scored the team's first run as Mike Hall flew out to right field. With runners on the corners and two out, Andres Tamayo walked to load the bases. Jourdain Dutton next walked, and Matt Statso came trotting home. The Senators got Jay Benedetti to fly out to end the inning and the Rangers threat.
The Senators came back to pull ahead 3-2 in the top of the third, and they never looked back. Brandon Casamassima of Marshall smacked a 2-RBI double, which brought home outfielder Xavier Qualls and third baseman Nick Wheeler. Casamassima was thrown out at second by the left fielder to end the inning.
The score stayed 3-2 until the seventh, when Vienna put together a four-run attack. Sam Honeck led off the inning with a walk. Shortstop J.D. Alfaro bunted and reached first on a throwing error, which pulled the first baseman off the bag. Left fielder Cody Lassley got on base with a bunt single to load the bases with no out. Right fielder Drew Allain then slugged a 2-RBI double to right field to bring home Honeck and Alfaro.
The Rangers then brought on southpaw Craig Henson to face the rest of the Senators. Bryce Mendonca hit a sacrifice fly to center field to allow Lassley to cross home plate for the team's sixth run. Nick Wheeler hit a double to right center field to allow Allain to score.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mason Griffin struck out the first batter. Pinch hitter Phil Ruzbarsky got on base with a single, but Griffin picked him off during Jay Benedetti's at-bat. Benedetti hit the ball to first base, and Sam Honeck made a great grab to end the game and secure the victory for the Senators.
