VIENNA SENATORS DEFEAT VIENNA POST 180 |
VIENNA , Va. July 22—The 2 nd Annual Burt Crump Classic was a smashing success Sunday afternoon at Waters Field as more than 200 people came out to support Vienna Baseball.
The Vienna Senators, defending champions of the Clark Griffith League, took on the American Legion Vienna Post 180 squad in a friendly competition, and won 4-0. The Classic will help prepare the Post 180 team for their post-season tournament this week.
The Burt Crump Classic, named after legendary Vienna coach Burt Crump, is one of the newest baseball traditions in Vienna . The event not only celebrates Crump's legacy (which includes two state titles and six district championships), but the National Pastime in Vienna . Coach Burt Crump threw out a ceremonial pitch to catcher Chris Berset, who is a Vienna native.
The umpires did not show for the game, but the teams went on with several Senators players, including Xavier Qualls, Darrin Campbell, Benji Kagan and Mason Griffin, judging the lines and Patrick Powers making calls from behind the plate. The Post 180 squad swatted at the balls with aluminum bats, while the Senators stuck with their trusty Zorian lumber.
Dave Kellerberg, a righty from Florida Southern got the start on the mound. Brian Brunseo relieved him in the fourth inning, and John Adams also saw some time on the mound for the Senators. The pitchers combined to strike out nine batters and allow just five hits. The Senators offense totaled eight hits. Brandon Casamassima went 2-for-2, as did J.D. Alfaro.
The Senators were the first team to put up a run, as first baseman Sam Honeck slugged an RBI double to center field to bring home third baseman Nick Wheeler.
The Senators added two more runs to go up 3-0 in the third inning. Left fielder Bryce Mendonca led off the inning with a double to left center field, and he took third on a stolen base. Mendonca scored as Matt Gaski hit an RBI single to right. Nick Wheeler got on base on a fielder's choice. He stole second and took third on a throwing error on the catcher, who tired to get him out at second. Wheeler came around to score the team's third run as Ryan Heroy grounded out.
In the sixth inning, an RBI single to left field by shortstop J.D. Alfaro brought home Kyle Page, who had reached base on a double. Page's run put the Senators up 4-0.
The Senators will return to Clark Griffith League play this week, playing four more regular season games before participating in the Jacobs Cup Post Season Tournament.
