VIENNA SENATORS BLANK DC GRAYS
|
VIENNA , Va. July 23—The Vienna Senators (36-5) defeated the DC Grays 8-0 in Vienna Monday night. The contest was the eighth and final meeting between the teams, and the Senators sealed a series sweep of the Grays for the season.
Louisiana-Lafayette product John Zorich got the start on the mound for the Senators and he was tough on the Grays. Zorich gave up just four hits in seven innings of work, getting a majority of the DC batters to ground out. Florida Southern pitcher Dave Kellerberg came on to pitch in the eighth, striking out two and retiring three straight batters. Mason Griffin pitched in the ninth, striking out one and picking off a runner for the third and final out of the game.
Vienna hit three home runs in the game—the most the team has hit in a single game all season. The Senators have also hit three homers in a game against the DC Grays on June 7 and against the McLean Raiders on June 27. Matt Gaski stood out offensively for the team, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Second baseman Matt Gaski got things rolling for the Senators in the first inning, as he smacked a solo shot over the wall in right center field to put Vienna up 1-0.
Shortstop J.D. Alfaro from the University of Oklahoma followed suit with his own home run in the second inning. Alfaro, on a 2-2 count, smacked the ball well over the well to left center to give the Senators a two-run cushion. Right fielder Kyle Kretchmer then doubled to right field to keep things rolling. Kyle Page reached first on an error, and Kretchmer came racing across home plate. Center fielder Bryce Mendonca then singled to left. But Matt Gaski grounded out to end the Vienna offensive.
First baseman Ryan Heroy hit his third homer of the season in the third inning, launching the ball over the left field wall to help the team go up 4-0.
Bryce Mendonca scored Vienna 's fifth run in the fifth inning. He walked to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on a passed ball during Matt Gaski's at-bat. Gaski then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Mendonca to come home safely.
The Senators bats got active again in the seventh inning. With bases loaded and no out, pinch hitter Sam Honeck knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to allow Kyle Page to score the team's sixth run. Center fielder Ryan Eden scored as Brandon Casamassima singled to left. The Grays then hit Ryan Heroy with a pitch to load the bases with one out. Catcher Cody Lassley then hit a sacrifice fly to allow Matt Gaski to score. Vienna left the seventh with an 8-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the last couple of innings, and the Senators walked off the field victorious.
The Senators will play three more regular season games before participating in the Jacobs Cup Post Season Tournament. From there, the Senators will travel to Wichita , Kansas to participate in the National Baseball Congress World Series.
