Senators get higher rank, win seventh contest against Bethesda

VIENNA , Va. July 24—The Vienna Senators moved up two spots in national rankings by PG Crosschecker on Tuesday, and continued to perform as a top-ranked team should. Now ranked 11 th nationally, the Senators defeated the Bethesda Blue Caps 9-4.

Righty Nate Newman got the start for the Senators (37-5) and picked up his sixth win of the season. He threw five innings and only gave up two hits. Billy Tinsley came on to pitch in the sixth inning and threw two innings. Benji Kagan came on in relief in the eighth for an inning and Mason Griffin closed the game for Vienna . The Senators pitchers combined to hold the Blue Caps to just four hits.

Senators batters totaled 14 hits in the game. Catcher Cody Lassley went 2-for-3, and Drew Allain went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Vienna was the first to score in the game, piling on three runs in the first inning. Shortstop J.D. Alfaro led off the inning with a stand-up double to left field, and he moved to third when third baseman Nick Wheeler singled to center field. Alfaro scored the first run when first baseman Sam Honeck hit a blooper up the middle. Cody Lassley of Wichita State then hit a single bunt to load the bases. Nick Wheeler scored as Ryan Heroy reached on a fielder's choice. While Drew Allain was batting, Sam Honeck scored the third run on a wild pitch. Allain struck out to end the inning.
The Blue Caps got a bit of revenge in the top of the second as Sean Plouffe scored on an error that allowed Mike Sweeney to reach first.

The Senators made it 5-1 in the second inning. Right fielder Kyle Kretchmer led off the inning with a walk. Kyle Page of Brevard Community College reached on an error and Kretchmer moved to second. J.D. Alfaro then hit a bunt single to load the bases with no out.

Then things got interesting. Matt Gaski of UNC-Greensboro came up to bat and got on first with a fielder's choice. The Blue Caps put out Alfaro at second, and Kyle Kretchmer came around to score on that play. Then the Bethesda second baseman tried to get Gaski out at first, but overthrew the ball, which forced the first baseman off the bag. The ball rolled to the wall and the Blue Caps first baseman tried to get Kyle Page out at home, but his throw did not make it in time, and Page scored. Gaski advanced to second on the play. The Senators left the inning up 5-1.

Vienna piled on three more runs in the bottom of the third. An RBI double by Kyle Kretchmer allowed Ryan Heroy to cross the plate. A sacrifice fly by J.D. Alfaro brought home Drew Allain and an RBI single by Matt Gaski scored Kyle Kretchmer.

The Senators made it 9-1 in the fifth inning as Drew Allain, who got on base with a double, scored as Brandon Casamassima reached on a fielder's choice. The Senators never scored again in the game after the fifth.

The Blue Caps put up their three runs of the game in the top of the eighth inning to make it 9-4. Sean Plouffe reached on an error. Mike Sweeney got on base with a single and Dimitri Deoudes walked to load the bases with one out. Then Benji Kagan walked Lee Boylard, which allowed Sean Plouffe to trot across home plate. With the bases still loaded, Kagan got Sam Loesche to strikeout. Then Max Eckert came up to the plate and walked, to bring home Mike Sweeney. Will Cooper got an RBI single to keep the bases loaded with two out. The Senators got Ross Sweeney to ground out to end the inning and end the Bethesda threat.

Mason Griffin, last season's league Most Outstanding Pitcher came on to close the game with the Senators up 9-4. Griffin struck out one and got two other batters to ground out and secure the 9-4 victory.

It was the seventh contest between the two teams and the Senators have defeated the Blue Caps in each game.

The Senators will play two more regular season games before participating in the Jacobs Cup Post Season Tournament. From there, the Senators will travel to Wichita , Kansas to participate in the National Baseball Congress World Series. It will be the team's second straight appearance in the World Series.
