VIENNA , Va. July 25—The Vienna Senators faced the Blue Caps for the eighth time this season, and walked off the field with a 17-0 win.
The Senators (38-5) have one more regular season game left before participating in the Jacobs Cup Post-Season Tournament and heading out for Wichita , Kansas for the NBC World Series. Tomorrow they will face the second-place Fairfax Nationals at Paul VI High School in Fairfax .
Aaron Loup of Tulane got the start for the Senators and struck out nine in eight innings of work. Right-handed pitcher Dave Kellerberg closed the game sand struck out two. Not only were the Senators pitching tough, but the defense was solid as well, as Vienna turned two double plays in the first four innings.
Two Vienna batters went yard again in Wednesday night's game at Waters Field. Ryan Heroy and Xavier Qualls both hit home runs to help lift the Senators to victory. The Senators collected 15 hits overall in the game. Nick Wheeler went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the game, Xavier Qualls was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and Chris Berset went 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs.
The Senators scored the first run of a game in the third inning. Center fielder Ryan Eden scored while Bryce Mendonca of Pepperdine was caught in a run-down play as he tried to steal second.
Chris Berset of Michigan made it 2-0 in the fourth inning with an RBI single to right field to bring home designated hitter Brandon Casamasssima.
Vienna added another run in the fifth as pinch hitter Xavier Qualls smacked an RBI double of the right field wall to bring home third baseman Nick Wheeler.
The Senators batters got busy in the seventh inning and scored six runs. Nick Wheeler, from West Alabama , brought home the next run as his RBI double to left center in the seventh inning allowed Steven Gauthe to score the team's fourth run. Then designated hitter Xavier Qualls made it 6-0 with a two-run home run to right-center. Catcher Chris Berset smacked an RBI double to score shortstop J.D. Alfaro to give Vienna the team's seventh run. Ryan Eden followed suit with an RBI double to bring home Chris Berset.
Ryan Eden came barreling home on an RBI single by second baseman Steven Gauthe. The Senators left the bases loaded when the Blue Caps got the third out. But the damage was done as the Senators had a 9-0 lead after seven complete.
Right fielder Drew Allain brought home Vienna 's tenth run with an RBI double in the eighth inning. Chris Berset slugged another RBI double to bring home Drew Allain and make it 11-0. Kyle Page and Chris Berset came around to score as Ryan Eden reached on an error.
Vienna made it 14-0 as Nick Wheeler hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Bethesda center fielder made a terrific diving catch, but the play allowed Ryan Eden to score. Sam Honeck was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two out. Ryan Heroy stepped up to the plate and smacked a three-run homer to left center field. It was his fourth home run of the season.
The Senator entered the top of the ninth up 17-0. Dave Kellerberg came into close the game, and struck out the last two batters to end the game and secure the victory.
The Senators will play one more regular season games before participating in the Jacobs Cup Post-Season Tournament. From there, the Senators will travel to Wichita , Kansas to participate in the National Baseball Congress World Series. It will be the team's second straight appearance in the World Series.
