VIENNA , Va. July 27—Coach Harry Marshall “Jake” Jacobs would have been proud.
The Fairfax Nationals and the Vienna Senators played a close and competitive contest in the championship game of the inaugural Jacobs Cup post-season tournament. Both teams played with the passion and competitive spirit that Coach Jacobs was known for when he was a coach at Bishop Denis O'Connell High School and the Clark Griffith League.
After being down 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the league champion Senators rallied to put up five runs in the eighth to win 6-2. Mason Griffin, last season's league Most Outstanding Pitcher picked up the win after shutting down Fairfax in the top of the ninth.
Dave Kellerberg stared on the mound for the Senators and Grant Dayton was the starting pitcher for the Fairfax Nationals. Kellerberg threw three innings before being relieved by John Zorich. Kellerberg threw well, giving up only three hits and striking out four. Mason Griffin threw 2.1 innings to close the game for Vienna . Grant Dayton had a strong start, working for six innings and striking out six. Derek Anderson, Michael Manfro, Jason Kennell and Nick Schreiber also pitched for the Nationals.
Several batters stood out in the game. Will Naylor went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Nationals and Fairfax 's Curtis Eward went 2-for-4 with an RBI as well. Third baseman Nick Wheeler went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Vienna .
The Nationals struck first in the second inning. Center fielder Will Naylor hit an RBI single to score catcher Robert Lamas.
The Senators responded in the bottom of the second to tie the game, 1-1. Catcher Cody Lassley got on base with a single, and went to second on a stolen base. Lassley scored the first Vienna run on an RBI single by right fielder Drew Allain.
The two teams stayed tied until the sixth inning, as the Nationals pulled ahead 2-1. Left fielder Zack Costello slugged a double to center field to start the rally. He moved to third as Robert Lamas flew out. Then first baseman Curtis Eward hit a single to short and Costello scored. Matt Rizzuto then lined out to pitcher John Zorich of Louisiana-Lafayette to end the inning.
The Senators came charging back in the eighth inning. The team's five-run rally sealed the victory for Vienna . Left fielder Bryce Mendonca reached first with a bunt-single. Second baseman Matt Gaski moved Mendonca over with a sacrifice bunt. Then Nick Wheeler of West Alabama slugged an RBI single to right field and Mendonca came blazing home to tie the game 2-2.
The Nationals brought on Jason Kennell to pitch to face Sam Honeck. Nick Wheeler stole second and went to third on a wild pitch while Honeck was batting. Honeck was walked to put runners on the corners with one out. The Senators then pinch ran Steven Gauthe for Sam Honeck. Kennell then intentionally walked Xavier Qualls to load the bases.
The Nationals then called upon Nick Schreiber to pitch. Cody Lassley came up to bat next. He reached first on an error, and Nick Wheeler scored to make it 3-2. Drew Allain of Tulane walked to keep the bases loaded and Steven Gauthe crossed the plate. Shortstop J.D. Alfaro reached on an error and Xavier Qualls scored to make it 5-2. A balk during Eden 's at bat allowed Cody Lassley to score the final Vienna run.
The Senators sealed the win with some solid defense in the top of the ninth. Matt Rizzuto grounded out to Brandon Casamassima, who made a great bare-handed throw to first baseman Ryan Heroy. Will Naylor got on first after being hit by a pitch. Eric Skinner hit the ball to shortstop and J.D. Alfaro jumped up and snagged the ball out of the air for the second out of the inning. Mason Griffin got the final out by striking out Ty Boyles.
The Clark Griffith League is proud of the success its teams have achieved this season. The League looks forward to next year's Jacobs Cup post-season tournament.
The Jacobs Cup honors the memory and legacy of Washington area legend, Coach Jacobs. Jacobs served with the Rangers, Raiders and Arlington Senators in various coaching capacities from the 1970s until his death in 2003. He coached the Raiders in their trips to the All-American Amateur Baseball Association National Tournament in Johnstown , Pa. in the 1980s and also was a coach with the Arlington Senators when they won four AAABA National Championships from 1997 to 2002. Jacobs is in the AAABA Hall of Fame and the Washington Home Plate Club Hall of Fame.
