|
VIENNA , Va. July 27—In Game 2 of the inaugural Jacobs Cup post-season tournament, the Vienna Senators defeated the Bethesda Blue Caps 11-1.
Billy Tinsley got the start for the Senators, threw six strong innings and struck out eight. Benji Kagan pitched two-thirds of the seventh inning to help seal the victory. The two pitchers allowed seven hits but only one run.
The Senators jumped on board in the first inning, going up 2-0. Steven Gauthe of Copiah-Lincoln started the team off with a single to center field. Right fielder Xavier Qualls got on with a walk, and Ryan Heroy loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Second baseman Brandon Casamassima then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Steven Gauthe. Drew Allain came up to bat and slugged an RBI single to right field to allow Xavier Qualls to score.
The Vienna bats were hungry in the second. Designated hitter Kyle Kretchmer hit a solo blast in the second to deep center field. Kyle Page of Brevard Community College later came around to score the fourth run in the inning as Xaxier Qualls grounded into a double play.
The Blue Caps chalked up their first run in the third inning, as catcher Max Eckert hit a solo home run to center field.
Then in the middle of the bottom of the third inning, a major rain storm swept through the Vienna area and the game was held up for more than an hour because of a rain delay. When the two teams started laying again at 6:35 p.m., there were two on with one out for Kyle Kretchmer. Kretchmer walked to load the bases with one out. Then Bryce Mendonca made it 7-1 with a 3-RBI double to center field. Steven Gauthe and Xavier Qualls walked to load the bases.
The Bethesda Blue Caps brought on Joe Infante to pitch, and he walked Ryan Heroy to allow Bryce Mendonca to score. Brandon Casamassima reached first on an error and Steve Gauthe came around to make it 9-1.
Center fielder Drew Allain added another run in the sixth inning with an RBI double to center field to bring home Brandon Casamassima. Drew Allain also came around to score the team's final run as Kyle Page hit an RBI single.
The game was called after the top of the seventh with the Senators winning 11-1. The game had to end early so that the Jacobs Cup Championship game could begin promptly at 8 p.m.
Because the Senators won the game, they advanced to the Jacobs Cup Championship, and faced the Fairfax Nationals. The Senators, who were already declared Clark Griffith League Champions for the second year in a row, look to win this year's post-season tournament championship.
Next week, the Senators will travel to Wichita , Kansas to participate in the National Baseball Congress World Series. It will be the team's second straight appearance in the World Series. Their first game will be on August 1 at 8:30 p.m. EST.
