VIENNA SENATORS CONQUER BLUE CAPS |
VIENNA , Va. July 3—The Vienna Senators charged to a definitive 13-0 victory against the Blue Caps on a cool Tuesday evening at Waters Field. Although they were at their home field, the Senators were the away team, to make up a game missed last week.
Nate Newman, a right-handed pitcher and this season's 2007 Home Run Derby champion, picked up the win after throwing a two-hit game for eight innings. Newman struck out nine batters and walked just one batter. Mason Griffin of Grayson Community College pitched the final inning and struck out the side. The Senators also picked up two double plays in the game.
The Vienna bats were on fire, as the team collected 17 hits against the Blue Caps—and totaled seven runs in the ninth inning. Nick Wheeler, a third baseman from Itawamba Community College , went 3-for-6 with 4 RBIs. First baseman Sam Honeck also stood out in the game, going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, including a home run.
The Senators put on their first run in the first inning. Tulane product Anthony Scelfo singled to get things rolling for the Senators. After stealing two bases, Scelfo scored when Sam Honeck hit a double to right field.
Vienna scored again in the second inning, as Drew Allain from Delgado Community College scored when center fielder Bryce Mendonca hit a sacrifice fly.
Sam Honeck's home run to right center field in the third inning put the Senators up 3-0. Vienna then stayed quiet at the plate in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. They put up two more runs in the seventh as Nick Wheeler hit an RBI double to score Anthony Scelfo. Wheeler later scored as designated hitter Ryan Heroy grounded out, to put Vienna up 5-0.
In the top of the eighth, Nick Wheeler hit a RBI single to score Bryce Mendonca. In the top of the ninth, the Senators more than doubled their run total to that point in the game.
Ryan Heroy singled to lead off the inning. Then Wichita State product Cody Lassley reached second on an error. Catcher Chris Berset doubled to center field to allow Heroy and Lassley to score. Kyle Kretchmer singled to put runners on first and third with no out.
Bryce Mendonca then walked to load the bases. Next, Anthony Scelfo walked and Berset scored. A single by Nick Wheeler to center field allowed Kretchmer and Mendonca to score. Alan Harris then pinch hit for Sam Honeck and singled to score Scelfo. Nick Wheeler scored the final run when Brandon Casamassima singled.
The Blue Caps then knuckled down to strike out Heroy and Lassley when they came up again in the inning and got Berset to fly out to end the ninth.
Mason Griffin, last season's Clark Griffith League Most Outstanding Pitcher, then struck out the Bethesda side to end the game.
The Vienna Senators will now take a break for two days for the Fourth of July holiday. They will next play the McLean Raiders at 7 p.m. on Friday at Mt. Vernon High School .
