VIENNA SENATORS BLANK PRINCE WILLIAM DAWGS
|
DALE CITY, Va. July 7—The Vienna Senators bats hammered away at the Prince William Dawgs Saturday night at Forest Park High School. The defending champions of the Clark Griffith League defeated the Dawgs 16-0.
It was a non-league contest, so the victory did not help the Senators advance farther up the Clark Griffith League standings. Vienna is now 21-4 overall, and will return to Clark Griffith League competition on Monday.
Vienna collected 14 hits in the game against the Dawgs, and only allowed two Prince William hits. Adam Dobies got the start for Vienna , and Billy Tinsley, Darrin Campbell, Benji Kagan and Mason Griffin appeared in relief.
The Senators did not score their first run until the third inning, when shortstop Steven Gauthe scored on an error that allowed second baseman Anthony Scelfo to reach first base. In the fourth inning, Vienna added another run as designated hitter Alan Harris scored on an RBI single by right fielder Kyle Kretchmer.
The Senators erupted for five runs in the fifth inning. Steven Gauthe, from Copiah-Lincoln Community College , led off the inning with a double to right center field. Anthony Scelfo followed with a single, and Scelfo moved to second base on a passed ball. The Dawgs catcher tried to throw out Gauthe at third, but he overthrew the ball. Gauthe scored and Scelfo came barreling down from second base to score also. Nick Wheeler got on base with a walk, stole second and moved to third when Alan Harris singled. Wheeler later scored on a wild pitch to Kyle Kretchmer, and Alan Harris moved to second on the wild pitch.
Kyle Kretchmer struck out swinging and was thrown out at first, and Harris moved to third on the play. Harris later came around to score and Kyle Page scored when Ryan Heroy hit an RBI single. The right fielder bobbled the ball on Heroy's single, which allowed Heroy to reach second and Page to score on the error.
Vienna piled on three more runs in the sixth. Anthony Scelfo reached first on an error and scored on a double by Alan Harris. Harris scored next on an RBI triple by Kyle Kretchmer. Kyle Page next brought home Kretchmer with an RBI single to right field.
In the seventh, the Senators went up 13-0. Ryan Heroy led off the inning with a double to left field. Then Bryce Mendonca, who went in at shortstop for Steven Gauthe in the sixth, got on base with a single. Anthony Scelfo brought them home with a giant home run to right field.
