VIENNA SENATORS DEFEAT BLUE CAPS |
VIENNA , Va. July 9—The flaming hot hitting streak that the Vienna Senators have been on lately stretched for another game, and the Senators show no sign that the streak will end soon.
The Senators, firing on all cylinders, defeated the Bethesda Blue Caps 18-1 at Waters Field. The Senators, the defending champions of the Clark Griffith League, moved to 21-4 in League play, and 22-4 overall.
Against the Blue Caps, Dave Kellerberg of Florida Southern pitched six strong innings and struck out six. Benji Kagan pitched two no-hit innings in relief and last season's League Most Outstanding Pitcher, Mason Griffin, closed the game.
While the Vienna defense was busy shutting down Bethesda , the Vienna offense was doing some heavy damage. The Senators collected 18 hits in the game, and several players had multi-hit games.
Among the top batters in the game, Itawamba Community College product Nick Wheeler went 3-for-6 with two RBI, while right fielder Drew Allain went 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Ryan Eden went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third when the Senators opened the floodgates for four runs. Drew Allain from Delgado Community College reached with a single, and moved to third when catcher Cody Lassley hit a single to right field. Allain scored on a wild pitch in the middle of Ryan Eden's at bat. Ryan Eden then got on base with a walk. Shortstop Steven Gauthe hit a single to right field, which allowed Cody Lassley to cross the plate safely. When Nick Wheeler hit a double down the left field line, both Ryan Eden and Steven Gauthe scored.
Vienna chalked up two more runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 6-0. Right fielder Kyle Kretchmer led off with a double and came home when Drew Allain hit an RBI double to right field. Ryan Eden hit a RBI double off the centerfield wall to bring home Drew Allain later in the inning.
The Senators were quiet in the fifth, but exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth to pull ahead 12-0. Steven Gauthe brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field, and Anthony Scelfo smacked a 3-run home run that went well over the center field wall. Nick Wheeler next got on base with a single, and Sam Honeck followed with a two-run shot to right center field. Honeck now has eight home runs on the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Caps put up their lone run on the scoreboard, as John Malbon hit an RBI single to score Jason Kitchen.
The Senators responded with a run in the seventh, as Kyle Page scored as Ryan Eden grounded out.
The Vienna bats brought home five more runs in the eighth inning. Anthony Scelfo scored the team's fourteenth run when Brandon Casamassima hit an RBI single. A two-RBI double by Kyle Page brought home Nick Wheeler and Alan Harris. Brandon Casamassima scored when Drew Allain hit a sacrifice fly to left field, and Kyle Page scored when Ryan Eden hit a single to the shortstop.
The Senators went quietly in the ninth and put down the Blue Caps to end the game 18-1.
