Defending CGL Champs Ready for New Season |
The
Vienna Senators, defending Clark Griffith League Champions, begin their
push for a record 10th championship Wednesday night at Waters Field in Vienna.
The team compiled a record of 39-5 in the Clark Griffith League last year,
with an overall record of 44-7. The Senators hold the CGL record with nine
championship titles, including the last two titles.
Last year was a record-setting year for the Senators. Not only did they
put together the best record in club history, but they rose as high as #6
in the national rankings. The Senators led the CGL in batting average, ERA,
and fielding percentage. They went 3-2 in the NBC World Series and 2-0 against
the Alaskan League All-Star team.
The
2007 Senators had 8 players on the CGL All-League Team, including the most
outstanding pitcher in Aaron Loup. First baseman Sam Honeck, second baseman
Steve Gauthe, third baseman Nick Wheeler, and outfielders Drew Allain and
Ryan Eden all made it as position players. In addition to Loup, pitchers
Nate Newman and Mason Griffin made the team.
Expectations are high again for the Senators this year. The only returning
player for the Senators is shortstop JD Alfaro, who is back for his third
season with the Senators. Alfaro, who attends Grayson Community College,
earned the title of MVP in the Junior College World Series in 2008.
Chris Burr returns for his 11th season as manager of the Senators. Burr,
a graduate of local James Madison High School, has led the team to a 356-134
record over the course of his tenure. Over that time, the team has won eight
CGL titles.
The Senators open the season at home against the Arlington Diamonds, before
hitting the road to play the McLean Raiders. The team returns home for the
weekend with four games at Waters Field against the Beltway Blue Caps, Fairfax
Nationals, and a Sunday doubleheader against the Panthers Gold.
