Senators Take Burt Crump Classic Over Post 180 |
July 20, 2008. Vienna, Va. -- With the Senators in the midst of a 16-game, 13-day stretch, the team got a much needed break Sunday with a 7-inning exhibition game against the Vienna Post 180 American Legion Team. The game, dubbed the Burt Crump Classic for the Legion's historic former manager, was a mismatch on paper. The Senators are currently the #3 ranked team in the country for collegiate summer teams, whereas the Legion team is in an entirely different league system. The Senators use wood bats, where as the Legion team still uses aluminum.
However, Post 180 came out and performed admirably, making for an entertaining game. However, the Senators had too much pitching, and shut down the Post 180 offense in a 4-1 victory. Will Krasne, making only his second start of the season, pitched five scoreless innings and only allowed one hit. Jordan Durrance pitched a scoreless sixth inning, before Ryan Schwenke shut the door in the seventh inning.
The Senators used solo home runs from Martin Parra and David Harris to pace the offense. Seth Henry added an RBI single, and another run scored when Harris grounded into a double play.
The Senators used their exhibition roster, which meant the addition of players who will be playing with the team when they got to Wichita, Kansas for the National Baseball Congress World Series. Max Eckert and Shane Brown, who both play for the Beltway Blue Caps in Clark-Griffith League play, made their Senators debut. Eckert was 1-2, and Brown was 0-3.
