Senators Eke One Out to Remain Unbeaten |
June 13,
2008 -- Vienna, VA. For six innings, the Senators high-powered offense was
held in check by opposing DC Grays pitching. However, they parlayed some timely
hitting along with some inept fielding from the Grays into a 4-3 victory at
Waters Field last night.
Grays pitcher Josh Rider flashed a dominant fastball at times that had Senators
waving at air. But he was tagged for four runs in four innings of work, due
to four fielding errors by his defense and a few sacrifice flies from the
Senators.
“His curveball was hard to pick up tonight, but he couldn’t throw
it for a strike, so I just laid off of it and it worked out okay,” said
Martin Parra.
The Senators leading hitter Wes Joy got the Senators on the scoreboard first
with a sacrifice fly that brought home Mario Williams. Eric Walker followed
that up with another sacrifice fly that plated David Harris. Both Harris and
Williams reached on errors.
The Senators didn’t get their second hit of the game until the 5th inning,
but it was a big one. Parra hit a line-drive, two-run home run that put the
Senators on top 4-0.
“He came in on me 2-0 with an inside fastball, and then he went 3-1,
and I thought he was going to throw me another fastball, so I just sat on
it and he put it down the middle,” said Parra.
The Senators timely hitting was backed up with another strong performance
from starter Eric Cantrell. Cantrell went six innings, his longest outing
of the year, and only gave up one run on four hits.
“I wouldn’t say I had my best stuff, but I just tried to throw
strikes to make them hit ground balls because [the Grays] are new to wood
bats.” Moving forward, pitching coach Mike Wallace wants Cantrell to
work on pacing himself, so that he can be fresh and pitch late into games.
The Grays made it interesting in the ninth inning, with a 2-run rally off
of Ryan Schwenke. Josh Steinburg was hit by a pitch and scored on a John Barrett
double. Barrett later scored on a Mike Bokman ground out. But Schwenke recovered
and struck out Mike Marion to end the game.
The Senators improve to 9-0 on the season. They have yet to give up more than
four runs in a game this season.
“We’re doing pretty well here, and we’re really starting
to come together as a team,” said Parra. “We’ve got some
good pitchers and they’re doing a good job for us, and we get the runs
when we need them.”
The Senators will play a double header tomorrow against the South Maryland
Cardinals from the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League. The Cardinals are
1-4 on the season. The first game starts at 5:00 PM at Waters Field.
