June
17, 2008 -- Fairfax, VA. On most nights in the Clark-Griffith League, Diamonds
starter Doug Ciallella’s pitching performance last night would have
been enough to secure a win for his team. However, Ciallella and the Diamonds
ran into the buzz saw that is the Vienna Senators. Senators pitchers Ian
Kadish, Chad Johnson, and Jimmy Duggan combined to outperform Ciallella
and shutout the Diamonds in a 3-0 Senators victory in Game 2 of a doubleheader
yesterday. The Senators trounced the Diamonds 15-0 in Game 1, improving
their overall record to 13-0.
Ciallella and Kadish went head to head in Game 2, both leaving opposing
hitters baffled. Kadish used a dominant fastball that had Diamonds hitters
struggling to catch up. Ciallella changed speeds effectively, using his
fastball and changeup equally to keep Senators hitters guessing.
However, the Senators hitters were finally able to crack Ciallella in the
fourth inning. Designated hitter David Harris led off the inning with a
single, and advanced to third on two groundouts. Senators leading hitter
Wes Joy then stroked an opposite field double to break the scoreless tie
and bring home Harris. Joy came around to score later in the inning on a
pair of Diamonds errors.
“I was focusing on staying back, seeing the ball, letting it come
to me, and then driving it to right field. He was mixing up his pitches
well, keeping us off balance. He had a pretty decent changeup, but I just
tried to pick my pitch, wait on the fastball and get aggressive,”
said Joy.
The Senators later increased their lead to 3-0 on an RBI double from Eric
Walker. That was more than enough for the Senators pitching, which held
the Diamonds to four hits. The only time the Diamonds threatened was in
the fifth inning, when they had runners on second and third. However, Kadish
was able to induce a ground out to end the inning.
In the earlier game, Senators hitters teed off on Diamonds starter Bobby
Thompson. After Thompson breezed through the first two innings in order,
the Senators bats came alive. They scored in each of the next four innings,
including seven in the sixth to break the game wide open.
Six Senators hitters recorded multiple hits, led by designated hitter Mario
Williams’ three hits. New Senator Gunnar Terhune made his debut at
shortstop in Game 1. Terhune, who attends the University of California at
Santa Barbara, recorded two hits and two RBI in his debut.
The Senators offensive onslaught was backed up by another strong pitching
performance. Senators starter Richard Cary pitched six innings, giving up
no runs and only five hits. Cary got some help from his defense, which threw
out runners at the plate and at second base.
“I was just trying to be efficient with my pitches. The key today
was focus, starting from when I wake up in the morning and know it’s
my day to pitch, until I show up at the ballpark ready to go,” said
Cary.
The Senators have a day off Wednesday. Their next game is Thursday at Paul
VI High School against the Fairfax Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for
7:00PM.
